How an Indian mobile number is built

Every Indian mobile number is exactly 10 digits, dialed after the +91 country code. Since India moved to a unified 10-digit plan, mobile numbers have started with 9, 8, 7, or 6 - the series were opened in that order as demand grew, so a 6-series number is simply a newer allocation, not a different kind of line. The plan is set by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and regulated by TRAI under the National Numbering Plan.

So a real number looks like +91 98765 43210: country code, then a 10-digit national number that begins 6-9. A dummy number from this page, such as +91 6555000000, keeps that exact shape - right code, right length, valid leading digit - which is what makes it drop cleanly into a form or a test fixture.

Reading and formatting a +91 number

• International: +91 XXXXX XXXXX (a 5-5 grouping is the common written form).
• Domestic: dialed as 0XXXXXXXXXX - the leading 0 is a national trunk prefix and is not part of the number itself.
• Landlines are different: an STD code (011 Delhi, 022 Mumbai, 080 Bengaluru, and so on) plus the subscriber number. This generator produces mobile numbers only.

Because of Mobile Number Portability (live in India since 2011), the leading digits no longer tell you the operator - a 98… number could be on Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL. Any tool that claims to guess the carrier from the prefix alone is guessing.

A note on the “555” in these numbers

North America reserves 555 for fictional numbers, and the UK has Ofcom’s drama ranges, but India has no officially reserved “fake number” block. The 555 you see here is our own marker so the output reads as obviously non-real and is very unlikely to collide with a live subscriber - it is a safety convention, not an official Indian reserved range.

FAQ

Will a generated number work to sign up for WhatsApp, Paytm, or another Indian app? No. Those services send a verification SMS to a real SIM, and a dummy number has no SIM behind it, so nothing ever arrives. Use these numbers to fill and test the form, not to clear a real verification step.

Are these numbers real or assigned to someone? They are randomly generated to look like Indian mobile numbers. They are not allocated to you and are extremely unlikely to reach a real person, but validity libraries only check shape, never live assignment.

Is it legal to use a fake phone number? Using dummy numbers for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups is completely fine. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or evade a verification you are required to complete is not.

What they are not
